My name is Chris Conover. I am a lifelong artist, and a newly elected member of Allied Artists of America. I was born and raised in New York City, the child of two artists. Drawing and painting were always an important way that we lived, played and communicated with each other, so it was natural for me to become a professional artist. For many years, I illustrated children's books and sometimes wrote them, too. My illustrations were hand painted fantasies using watercolor with pen and ink. I frequently exhibited my paintings at The Society of Illustrators, The Schiller-Wapner Gallery, The Master Eagle Gallery, and The Grolier Club. I published 20 books in all, and my books were well reviewed and won many awards.
After a while, it was time for a change. I wanted to work as a painter, independent of a text and a publisher. Thus began my second career. It took a while to transition from illustration to fine art. It was hard work, but the change was exhilarating. I decided to learn a new medium - Acrylic. I found out about different art groups, and went to see the exhibits they put on. I was thrilled when I entered and was accepted into the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Annual Open Exhibit in 2013. I tried out for other yearly open exhibits, kept on painting, and exhibited more and more. I won a Judges Award from The Animal in Art Exhibition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 2016, my painting "Carriage Horse, Central Park" won the Anna Hyatt Huntington Bronze Medal at the CLWAC Annual Open Exhibit. In 2021, I received the Katlan Family Award for a City Scene in Oils and Acrylics from the Audubon Artists 79th Annual Exhibition for my painting "A Chelsea Morning". In 2024, my painting "In My Studio" (seen below) won the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylics, Inc. Award from the Salmagundi Club Annual Open Exhibition.
I am an Elected Member of CLWAC, American Artists Professional League, and Allied Artists of America and an Associate Member of Audubon Artists. I exhibit frequently with the Salmagundi Club, and I used to exhibit in shows with the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylics during the years when they were active.
